After one year of intense preparation work and live trials in 2021, the first virtual roadshows with external partners from Sweden, Denmark took place on April 8 and Latvia took place in April 26. The roadshow trials focusedon demonstrating the scalability of the GOF2.0 architecture, by operating a subset of the planned scenarios in three countries of selected advisory board members.
During the virtual trials team of experts tested how unmanned and manned aircraft can operate in unified airspace with the support of unmanned traffic management solutions and how cellular networks can support the safe inclusion of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) into common air traffic by enabling UAV-to-UAV and UAV-to-ground communication.
“The goal was to demonstrate and understand how easily Communications Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) and Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) data and systems, as well as local unmanned and manned aircraft operators can be integrated into the GOF2.0 solution. This was to showcase the international scalability of the U-space architecture,” explained Maria Tamm, GOF2.0 project coordinator at EANS.

According to Gints Jakovels, LMT innovation Lead from the Latvian trial mobile networks and 5G will play a critical role in the successful incorporation of UAVs in common airspace. “At the GOF2.0 Roadshow in Riga, LMT main goal was to demonstrate how mobile networks can support the safe inclusion of UAVs into the common air traffic by enabling UAV-to-UAV and UAV-to-ground communication. This is crucial for flight risk assessment and hence successful deployment of drone technologies,” said Jakovels. “Demonstration showed that we can achieve it using existing aviation systems in combination and with integration of new technological solutions as UTM, cellular network and network remote ID.”
The key lessons from both virtual trials, conducted in Latvia and Sweden-Denmark proved that in order enable safe UAV flights, especially in controlled airspace requires both user awareness in airspace and will for change, acceptance, and involvement from crewed aviation. From the outcome of trials, it is inevitable that there must be common information flow, including cellular network prediction and availability to ensure safe communication channel between all stakeholders.
According to Steen Myhre Taschner Erichsen, Naviair Head of UTM Development & Strategy the need is to bring all involved parties together to test and validate until there is common understanding how to enable safe integration of drones into airspace.
“We already know that drones and U-space introduces new technologies that require higher level automatization. From these trials we got the real-life experience – how the systems work today, what kind of improvement they need to handle future drone traffic in controlled and uncontrolled airspace. Next to that there is a need for procedures, harmonization and responsibility agreements regarding border crossing, handover of control, needed information in the Drone flight plan, and potentially CTOT/ACDM like procedures,” explained Taschner Erichsen.
The key lessons from roadshow trials will be an important enabler for the further development of the drone market and will deliver the technical components (services, software, competencies, practices) required to cost-efficiently operate autonomous and semi-autonomous drones beyond visual line of sight in shared airspace.
GOF 2.0 is managed by the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking in an effort to deliver solutions for U-space, the European Commission’s initiative on the safe and secure integration of drones in European airspace.

CAFA Tech (Estonia) is providing:
1. Automated drone systems with cellular (4G/5G) communication
2. Autonomous and tele-operated mobile robots for ground maintenance, surveillance and logistics
3. Computer Vision Systems for analysing drones´ /robots´ sensors and cameras data feeds in near real time. CAFA Tech is participating in EU project 5!G Drones (2019-2022) where CAFA is leading the Trials task force. In 5G!Drones project CAFA Tech is developing automated UAV system with 5G communication module for delivering parcels, IoT sensors etc.
The CAFA 3D map supports BVLOS drone operations planning with the mobile network coverage data. From 2021 CAFA Tech is participating in the EVOLVED 5G project, to develop and test robots and 5G MEC based applications for Factory 4.0 solutions.

Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) affiliated to the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences is an internationally known node of the European Research Area in the field of IT infrastructure of science and an important R&D center in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT). Every day Polish Air Navigation Services Agency ensures safety of passengers in more than 3,000 flights over Poland. We have one of the biggest airspace in Europe: over 334,000 km2. Before coronavirus pandemic almost a million overflights, approaches, take-offs and landings in 2019 were supervised by almost 600 air traffic controllers employed in Polish Air Navigation Services Agency, as well as around 260,000 General Aviation flights under watch of the Flight Information Service (FIS). Polish Air Navigation Services Agency is also the only institution in Poland training and employing civil air traffic controllers (ATCOs). We also provide Flight Inspection Services for monitoring the proper operation of ground-based navigation aids from the air. Our air traffic controllers are supported by advanced technology. Over 200 devices located throughout Poland guaranteeing safety of air traffic within the Polish airspace: air-ground communication systems, RNAV systems, ILS – DME systems supporting smooth and precise landing in low visibility, radars. PANSA also builds and develops tools for efficient management and planning of airspace: CAT (Common Airspace Tool) – that ensures accurate and efficient management of the airspace, PANDORA – that supports controllers and other operations personnel with the wide spectrum of a real time aviation data, raising their situational awareness, PANSA UTM – system for UAV flight coordination, TRAFFIC – Track Advisor for Flight Information Concerns, which provides the ATM system information from flight plans, as amended and complementary messages.
Robots.Expert (REX) is a consultancy focused on unmanned aviation. REX help companies adopt new drone technology in their business, often through live demonstrations to jump-start understanding of the potential.
